Don’t Stereotype OneSeason Traders! (Or NATION Members!)

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Here is a letter I recieved last night. It was in response to a letter I sent out to all female NATION members. A media outlet was looking to speak to a female OneSeason member. I thought I’d share this email I got back from one of our NATION members with everyone, after permission from the author. Enjoy -BP

Hello Bullpup,

Wow I am indeed female. My name is (real name) with my screen name being (screenname) and I am a 48 year old grandmother who’s son told me about OneSeason and got me started, lets just say mama’s not a fool, at least not all the time. For me it was easy to see how smart this is. And this was before I knew anything about Mike the CEO and how smart this young man was to put the 2 things he loved together to came up with this. How wonderful for him.

I use to collect baseball cards when my son was young but I obviously did not have the opportunity to start that collection at the beginning when the cards were first made, no instead I used them to make a noise against my tire spokes. So this time when an opportunity comes along that has the potential to be so extremely huge and I am standing near the threshold of where that door opened, I’d be a fool not to be standing there helping to hold that door open.

I don’t sell off what I buy, my first IPO Pipeline to jump in for was Oden and I got my first 10 shares that split to 20. I was tickled. I tried for 20 shares of Iverson but misses out on him. I’m not like all these guys who panic sell off their shares the moment the market starts to go down, or they read something negative, stupid sissy boys. When are they going to learn. Sit still, pass this information on to others so they bring their money to the table and wait it out. How easy can it be.

Look if this was a fly by night thing Mike would still be 20 right now putting it together right after he got out of school and before he did all his homework. Not the case, He did it right, took his time to make his dream become a reality. I don’t know everything about it but I have all the time in the world as I’m not going anywhere so I will learn.

Take care and Happy Trading,
(real name)

Week 12 Football Polls

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Every week i plan to post a poll for every NFL game. I encourage everyone to vote for every game so we can see how the Nation views the match-ups of each week. I have also posted a poll in the Football Forum regarding possibly running a weekly NFL Pick’em pool for those that are interested. If you think you might be interested in that, check out the forum post and poll and respond. Each poll is set to close 1 hour prior to kickoff so if you want to vote don’t wait until the last minute. Also feel free to leave a comment about anything regarding this weeks match-ups. Good luck!

Marc Cuban

Cuban

Everyone seems to have their own opinion on Marc Cuban and how he acts as the owner of the Dallas Maverics (and possibly the Chicago Cubs, however he has recently denied interest…ya right Marc), however now his image seems to be in its darkest hour. Cuban has been charged by the SEC for using inside, confidential information to save himself from over $750,000 in losses regarded a stock investment in the search engine mamma.com. Cuban is accused of selling his entire share of the ownership, which was 6%, the day before information became public that caused the stock to plummet 10% (and we think we have it bad in the OneSeason market?). However, of course, Cuban has denied the claims and it will be interesting to see how this all pans out.

Seems like this isn’t the only bit of Cuban’s worries, as the Maverics have been simply abysmal to start things off this year. The only bright thing that I’ve seen on the squad is Josh Howard…but too bad he admitted to smoking weed in the off season and refused to sing the national anthem. Combine this with the Cowboys rocky state, and Dallas sports seem to be looking about as hectic as the situation up in Seattle, and that is saying something. Let’s hope that this all blows over and the accusations are not true, because as much as you may hate the man, you must admire his passion for his team and willingness to get personally involved with the sport he loves. I’d much rather see owners like him than say the Rooney brothers up in Pittsburgh who discuss ownership percentages all day rather than actually rooting for their team.

I Have a Dream-The ESPN SOI Ticker

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

I know that some people are nervous about the growth of oneseason, and the rest of us are just waiting for more people to join, in the meantime we all wait and wonder. How will we know when Oneseason has arrived? When will Oneseason go from being just a dream, to the standard in Sports Entertainment? And when can those of us in here now plan our trip to Hawaii? Well I have 3 words to describe just that moment- ESPN SOI Ticker. The day when we know that this is for real is the day they launch the ticker during sports center, with a nice cover story to go along with it. That is my dream for Oneseason.

Oneseason Nation leader Bullpup spoke about the Yahoo factor during the first few days of oneseason, in a recent article at the Nation.  It was amazing how many people joined over those first 2 weeks. Most of the people who joined early on can trace their referral back to Yahoo, including myself.

We have all been wondering if there will be another surge like that, or if the growth will be slowed to a normal pace, and moreover, will this thing ever achieve the huge number of users that some of us dream about, like the 1 million mark. Well an ESPN SOI Ticker could either provide just that surge, or just be the final destination of a couple of years of strong growth, either way an ESPN SOI Ticker will be a scrolling stamp of approval from the sports world that Oneseason is for real and here to stay.

One this happens we will see sports SOI shows devoted to talking Oneseason shareholder value. We’ll see articles in the major sports magazines, and we’ll even see new publications and books all devoted to Oneseason. There will be success stories, trading advice and all kinds of call in radio shows.

Just imagine a Jim Cramer “Mad Money” for Oneseason, maybe with Bullpup as it’s host. Maybe you’ll hear Shay and the gang at oneseasonpodcast.com on a national ESPN radio show. And maybe you’ll see Knup with his own section on the ESPN website.  Not to mention the fact that the Nation, consisting of oneseasonnation.com, oneseasontrader.com and oneseasonpodcast.com will be the place to go on the web for all of your oneseason news, talk and advise. All of this could be made possible by the ESPN factor, which will be visible at the bottom of the screen in a scrolling ticker.

I’m waiting for that day, or even for us to start moving forward again, but until then let’s just enjoy the ride and dream.

I fell asleep to ESPN last night, and I had a dream of a ticker going by the bottom of the screen, Brady was all green as he was getting ready to start another Super Bowl after a great comeback season, and I reached for my laptop to check my account.

That’s just My Slanted Dream for Oneseason and the Nation…

A Closer Look at the Declining Market and the Yahoo! Factor

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

I’ve had many people ask me via phone calls and emails what my opinions are about the current market. I can’t say that my opinion would be more true than anyone else’s, and you know what they say about opinions. I know the majority opinion out there is that there is not enough new users on OneSeason to drive the market upwards. I can see this as being true, but I also have a theory around this that may put more light on the situation later in the article.

I keep hearing and reading a term that Mike Sroka has used a lot when he is asked the question “Why is the market in a decline?” I have heard the term “Price Discovery” used many times, so I decided to check this out, and apply it to the OneSeason market.

What does it Mean? A method of determining the price for a specific commodity or security through basic supply and demand factors related to the market.

Investopedia Says…Price discovery is the general process used in determining spot prices. These prices are dependent upon market conditions affecting supply and demand. For example, if the demand for a particular commodity is higher than its supply, the price will typically increase (and vice versa).

I think that our market is struggling to find the pricing equilibrium. We have had huge swings in both directions, multiple times. This shows that the market doesn’t really know where it should be. This is the Price Discovery that Mike Sroka is talking about. We have seen a sharp decline in volume on OneSeason in the last week as well. I don’t think this is completely due to lack of new memberships, this is due to a huge gap between what the buyers are willing to pay, and what the sellers are willing to let their shares go for. This gap has been becoming wider, each day. This tells me that the sellers are slowly running out of shares, and the power is slowly switching back to the people who have been buying shares over the last week. The people that are buying now, believe in OneSeason for the long term, and aren’t going to sell the shares for less than they bought them for. The profit takers are nearly tapped out of shares, and the market should begin to slowly work it’s way back to positive gains. It will be a long slow road, as I expect when stocks hit the 4-5 range again, there will be many people willing to take this double on their money, and sell again.

I know as far as the Nation goes, we have several hundred people who are holding shares, not willing to sell at these prices. We also have several people with massive amounts of cash in reserves all waiting for things to drop into the $1.xx range. There will be a LOT of buying and a LOT of volume if prices fall into this range. I, for one, will be buying upwards of $10,000 in shares if prices go into the 1’s.

There is a LOT of information out there. I encourage you to listen to Mike Sroka’s audio interview from RotoExperts. I encourage you to read all the interviews he’s done. He does a pretty good job of providing the his vision for OneSeason. I believe that the number of users they have right now are around 10x more than they expected for how they wanted to roll this out. I attribute this to the Yahoo! Factor.

The word of mouth was fine, and planned, but when Yahoo! had the AP Press article that all the other media outlets had, but theirs was on their front page, with color photos “BUY TIGER, SELL KOBE” and it sat there at the top of Yahoo! for 6 hours….I think that is what jumped the site to out of control proportions. That was never intended. What we saw in October wasn’t supposed to happen. The only way that OneSeason could keep growing at that rate, would be to get on the front page of Google for 6 hours, the front page of ESPN for 6 hours, the front page of MSN for 6 hours, etc. OneSeason had a definite plan for rolling the site out, but I believe that the Yahoo! “accident” happened, and spiked their new user sign up to rates that they could never keep up with. The new user sign ups, like the market, will correct itself, and decline back to the original slow, very slow, continual growth that OneSeason planned on in the first place. The Yahoo! Factor is my opinion what caused a majority of what we’re seeing now. If you saw our Poll, Yahoo! was the number 2 reason people heard about OneSeason on the nation with 26% of the vote compared to 47% word of mouth. If you want to get technical, on those that heard about it word of mouth, how did the person that told them about OneSeason originally hear about it? I bet you’d be able to follow the tracks back to the Yahoo! Factor in more than half of the people that say they heard it from word of mouth. I know with just myself, there would be no NATION right now, and OneSeason would have approximately 50 fewer people on it, that would never have heard about it from me, or a person that I told, due to the Yahoo! Factor.

I believe that we should wait for the “Price Discovery” to shake itself out, have some fun, and see what kind of third party applications start rolling out. There will be very slow, very gradual increases in the coming weeks an months, and OneSeason’s new user sign up plan gets back to where they intended. You can’t expect them to change all of their plans to adjust for the Yahoo! factor.

FOLLOW UP TO THE YAHOO FACTOR REPORT….

What happens is all of these websites have subscriptions to the Associated Press (AP).

The AP puts out hundreds of articles a day, and all these sites that apply to the AP (pay a fee to get these articles) post selected ones on their site…..most of them are just buried in different categories, or may not even end up on the site…

In this case….WHOOPS…not only did it end up on the front page of Yahoo! (The number #2 most visited site on the Internet, second to only Google, according to Alexa)…not only did it end up on the front page of Yahoo! It was a featured top 4 article at the top of the page, it had a picture, and it said in huge letters “BUY TIGER/SELL KOBE”, AND it was there for half the day!

Scott Boras ruined my life

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Our Baseball Guru TheBrett is back with his latest thoughts on fantasy baseball, for your enjoyment…

I know this has nothing to do with Fantasy Baseball, but  the season is really far away and my next article is going to be about how someone over paid for Manny (a Boras client).  I just wanted everyone to be prepped with the backstory of why.

I wish Scott Boras would ride Supermans horse,

I wish Scott Boras would get a blood transfusion from Magic,

I wish Scott Boras would go on a date with O.J.’s ex-wife,

I wish Scott Boras would catch penis tip cancer,

I wish Scott Boras had called SHOTGUN with Earnhardt Sr.,

I wish Scott Boras would get into an altercation at a strip club with Pac Man,

I wish Scott Boras took Isiah’s sleeping pills,

I wish Scott Boras was Travis Barkers body guard, etc…

Sure, Alard Baird was an accomplice, but really he was just being held hostage by Scott Boras.

Did I mention I wish Scott Boras would be prison cell roomates with Shaq?

Ok sorry, the backstory as promised.

Scott Boras and Alard Baird collectively ruined my life.

My starting outfield in 1999 when I had Royals season tickets was

Johnny Damon, Jermaine Dye and Carlos Beltran.

We also had a young, healthy and productive Mike Sweeney plus Joe Randa playing 3rd base.

Then Scott Boras who is an asshole started discussing contracts.

The result was Baird (who in the interest of fairness I should mention IS what professional doctors refer to as “a fucking stupid retard” in medical books and such) decided he had to trade his stars and get some value in return instead of letting them leave in Free Agency and getting first round picks as compensation.

Johnny Damon and second baseman Mark Ellis to the A’s for shortstop Angel Berroa, catcher A.J. Hinch and reliever Roberto Hernandez in a three-team trade also involving the Devil Rays.

Jermaine Dye to the A’s, via the Rockies, for shortstop Neifi Perez in a three-team trade.

Carlos Beltran to the Astros for third baseman Mark Teahen, catcher John Buck and righthander Mike Wood in a three-team trade also involving the A’s.

The result?  My Yals went from a legitimate up and coming team, to just another small market piece of shit while Damon and Dye won rings and Beltran single handedly carried that ghey Astros team on his back.

Sorry, I’m bitter.  The next post will be relevant I swear.

COMING SOON:

Manny Ramirez: Texas Ranger?

P.S. - I wish Scott Boras did Coke with Len Bias and got a heart transplant from Hank Gathers.

OneSeason Nation Games Wants You!

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

OneSeason is slowly taking us all. As a OneSeason hobbyist and addict I find myself in position to announce that I am in the midst of working on some OneSeason Games projects. Every single game will be related to OneSeason and will not work unless OneSeason exists. I would honestly love to see 20 or so fully functional user-made games on a website by the end of the year. I currently have 10 games written up and I want people to expect them to be launched soon!

If you have ANY interest at all in being a part of the OneSeason Nation Games team send me a private message on the forums. I am currently looking for these positions:

- ASP/PHP programmers

-Web designers/Internet Engineers

-Java/C# programmers

-Mathematicians

If you can fulfill any of those and would like to contribute to the team just shoot me a message. If you don’t qualify under any of those but would like to help anyway, send me a private message telling me what and how you can contribute.

As the Official OSN Guardian of the Greenhorns I would like to thank everyone for helping OneSeason Nation during it’s transition to the updated website and urge people to continue contributing so we can be the #1 OneSeason Fan site on the web!

Fantasy Basketball

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

KMart

What’s up Nation members, I’d just like to quickly introduce myself and let you all know what I will be contributing to the Nation as a fantasy basketball writer. I can’t promise you I will supply you with the ingredients to a guaranteed fantasy league championship, but what I do intend to do is provide you all with my personal insight on tidbits here and there that will no doubt improve your team.

I’ll start things off this week with a simple article yet one that you may not have seen coming, so check the fantasy basketball section for updates. I realize right now that the OneSeason market isn’t really influenced by on-court performance, however in the long run it will be, so I will try to include players that are currently being traded as SOI’s in the OS market. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please feel free to contact me here on the Nation, and I look forward to contributing to the community. Enjoy the first article!

What’s up nation members, this is the first of many articles that I’ll be throwing up here for all of you fantasy basketball addicts out there. We all know the basics, the top players, and how our teams are panning out so far. I’ll start things off this week with a little different angle.

This offseason was rocked by trades and player moves, most recently including the Iverson - Billups blockbuster. While many of these trades were beneficial for both teams, the one that continually makes me scratch my head is the Nuggets dealing away Marcus Camby (my pre-season #5 center behind Amar’e, Brand, Bosh, and Gasol) for essentially nothing (2nd round draft picks). The aftermath of this is a huge hole in the already weak Nuggets D, despite George Karl’s efforts.

What does this mean to us fantasy owners? Get your hands on Kenyon Martin. His production this year has been incredible. Hes playing like he did back in his glory days in Cincinnati. Averaging over 7 boards and nearly 14 points a game may seem a little low, but give this offense a little bit of time to finally adjust playing with a real pointguard (Iverson is great, but Chauncey is more of a true PG) and these numbers should shoot up. Coming off of a wrist injury, his past two games he has played solid, capping off last night with 16 against the best defense in the league, Boston. By mid season I’d expect him to be averaging near 16+ a game, and wouldn’t be surprised to see him dropping 20+ against some weaker defensive teams. Combine this with the fact that his next two games are against the T-Wolves and the Bucks, I expect BIG numbers from him coming real soon.

I don’t know how well this Denver team will perform in the long run, only time will tell. What I do see in this team is Kenyon Martin becoming even more of a centerpiece now that Camby is gone and they have a guard that makes others around him better. Iverson averaged over 25/game with Denver the past two seasons, while Chauncey averaged 17 with the pistons the past two years. What does this mean? More points are going to be scored by other nugget players this year, and considering Melo is already carrying so much of the load already, Kenyon Martin is bound to step up. I’m not saying to sacrifice solid players in a trade to get him by any means, but if you feel he is pluck-able in your league, by all means snag him up. Also in a few smaller leagues, I know he was occasionally dropped when he hurt his wrist and missed two games.

For those of you in keeper leagues, I suggest looking at Greg Oden. I know your thinking “wow thats obvious”, but seriously now is the time to make a move for him. People are panicking with him (even in the OneSeason market he has tanked) and are afraid he won’t pan out. This guy dominated at Ohio State with essentially one hand, and I expect him to do the exact same in the NBA. He will put up solid numbers for a long time to come. He won’t be the next Amar’e or Dwight Howard, but he will be a solid player to build your team around — and right now his stock is at an all time low, so it wouldn’t hurt to try and make a move for him. Yes his offensive game needs work (but honestly, which big mans game doesn’t need work coming right out of college?).

I hope this has helped, and seeing as this is my first write-up here, I know it is far form perfect so any and all feedback is appreciated. In future articles I will try to cover more and include more ‘risky’ moves, but just for now I wanted to be safe and to the point. So let me know what you think and I’ll be sure to listen.

Take it easy boys, and enjoy your day off from trading.

-Matt

Hot or Not? Week 11 Start/Sit Analysis

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Hello everyone. Welcome to the first weekly edition of my Fantasy Football Start/Sit list. Every week I will list a few players who I think are start worthy at each position, and a few players who I think should be left on your bench. I will try to avoid mentioning obvious every week starters, unless they have been significantly underperforming (hello, LT). For this week I will preface my start decisions with a list of studs (players to start every week, regardless of match up). I will also avoid mentioning obvious bench players. Just keep in mind that, despite my careful research, I am only human and will get predictions wrong from time to time. Take my recommendations with a grain of salt alongside your own research, and never bench your studs in favor of one of my recommendations, unless you feel that their upside potential is worth it. Keep a lookout every Tuesday for my Start/Sit Revisit, in which I will analyze my predictions to see how I did. On to the list…

Quarterback

Studs:

Kurt Warner @ SEA
Drew Brees @ KC
Peyton Manning vs. HOU
Jay Cutler @ ATL
Donovan McNabb @ CIN
Philip Rivers @ PIT

Start:

Aaron Rodgers vs. CHI: The other A-Rod would be on the Stud List if he was not so inconsistent week to week. Despite his inconsistencies, Rodgers will be Stud List worthy this week against a mediocre Chicago pass defense. The Packers running game has been struggling, and against Chicago’s stout run defense the Pack will be forced to throw early and often. 250+ yards and a couple TDs should be expected.

Jake Delhomme vs. DET: They’re playing Detroit at home. Need I say more? Rule #1 in Fantasy Football - Start everyone playing Detroit. Delhomme will make up for his abysmal performance last week.

Ben Roethliberger vs. SD: Tough Big Ben is recovering nicely from his various injuries and apparently was throwing 50 yard bombs in practice this week. Look for the Steelers to air it out against a mediocre and banged up San Diego secondary, especially with their running squad banged up.

Matt Ryan vs. DEN: It’s time to get on the Matt Ryan bandwagon and ride this hot hand. The impressive rookie has surprised everyone this season and should have continued success against Denver’s terrible pass defense. Expect a shootout in Atlanta this week.
Tyler Thigpen vs. NO: The return of Larry Johnson should open up the passing game even more for the impressive Thigpen, especially against the Saint’s weak secondary.
Shaun Hill vs. STL: I great spot start if you’re hurting at QB this week. Hill has looked good thus far and should find success against the struggling Rams.

Sit:

Eli Manning vs. BAL: While consistent in his production, the other Manning has failed to produce stellar numbers this year. Temper your expectations for him even further against the Ravens and look for the Giants to do what they do best: run, run, run.

Joe Flacco @ NYG: The impressive rookie will have a reality check against the stout Giants pass rush. Needless to say, I think this will be a low scoring affair.

David Garrard vs. TEN: Garrard posted a great stat line last week, against Detroit. This week he faces the Titans, a completely different story. Combine this with the fact that Matt Jones is banged up and you’ve got a definite sitter.

Kyle Orton/Rex Grossman @ GB: It looks like Orton will play this week, but don’t expect him to have a good game against the Packers 3rd ranked pass defense.

Running Back

Studs:

Frank Gore vs. STL

Adrian Peterson @ TB

Clinton Portis vs. DAL****

Joseph Addai vs. HOU

Matt Forte @ GB

Brian Westbrook @ CIN

Ladainian Tomlinson @ PIT**

Marion Barber @ WAS

Start:

Michael Turner vs. DEN: Burner could very well be on the stud list the way he has played this year. In his 4 games playing at home this year, Turner has averaged over 118 yards and has 6 TDs. Expect even bigger things this week against the Bronco’s 27th ranked run defense. Burner is definitely the start of the week.

DeAngelo Williams vs. DET: Remember rule #1? Williams will continue his hot streak this week.

Ronnie Brown vs. OAK: Brown will post great numbers this week against the Raiders, who are ranked 29th in rushing yards allowed per game

Deuce McAllister @ KC: Reggie Bush will be sitting out one more week so Deuce gets the cushy start against the Chief’s weak run D. The Saints do like to pass a lot, but I expect them to “run” down the clock in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Sit:

Earnest Grahm vs. MIN: Easy bench call. Grahm, who has not played well since week 4, goes up against the 3rd ranked Vikings run D. Combine this with the carries that “Cadillac” Williams will vulture and we’ve got a definite loser.

Ryan Grant vs. CHI: Despite playing well the last few weeks, Grant will struggle against the Bears tough run D. Expect the Pack to pass a lot, and Grant is not known as a very solid pass catching RB.

Maurice Jones-Drew vs. TEN: MJD had a great game last week against everyone’s favorite Lions. Temper expectations against the Titans.

****Clinton Portis vs. DAL: Portis is injured with an MCL sprain and is listed as day-to-day. Even if he does play, expect it to be in a limited role against a well rested Dallas defense coming off of a bye.

**LT @ PIT: I would start him anyway (because he is LT), but temper expectations against a very stout Steeler defense. If you have options with more upside, I might consider them over LT.

Wide Receiver

Studs:

Anquan Boldin @ SEA

Larry Fitzgerald @ SEA

Andre Johnson @ IND

Reggie Wayne vs. HOU

Brandon Marshall @ ATL

Randy Moss vs. NYJ

Steve Smith vs. DET

Greg Jennings vs. CHI

Roddy White vs. DEN

Calvin Johnson @ CAR

Santana Moss vs. DAL

Start:

Terrell Owens @ WAS: T.O. should bounce back this week with the return of Romo. It is slightly unpredictable how Romo’s pinky will hold up, but you gotta start him and T.O. anyway.

Marques Colston @ KC: He’s back from injury and will be put on the stud list next week after a big game this week.

Lee Evans vs. CLE: Evans struggled last week against the Patriots, but should find room this week against a Cleveland secondary that gave up almost 450 yards last week to Jay Cutler.

Hines Ward/Santonio Holmes vs. SD: Look for these two to have big games against the Charger’s terrible pass D, especially with the Steeler’s backfield banged up.

Antonio Bryant vs. MIN: The Bucs will have to pass a lot to beat the Vikings; expect Bryant to be an integral part of that passing attack.

Donald Driver vs. CHI: The Bears give up the 6th most fantasy points to wide receivers, and Driver has been the focal point of the Pack’s passing attack, receiving more than 20 targets over the past 3 games.

Sit:

Devin Hester @ GB: Don’t expect much from Hester this week, who’ll be catching balls from a QB returning from injury or Rex Grossman and facing Green Bay’s third ranked passing D.

Chad Johnson vs. PHI: Expect this to be a sack fest, as the Eagle’s defensive line will give Palmer no time to throw the ball.

Bernard Berrian @ TB: After posting a big fat zero last week, Berrian should once again struggle against the 5th ranked Buc’s pass D.

Chris Chambers @ PIT: Like Berrian, Chambers posted a zero last week, and should also struggle against the 1st ranked Steel Curtain pass defense.

Ted Ginn Jr. vs. OAK: The Raiders suck (I think even Raiders fans accept this now), but Nnamdi Asomugha does not, as he continually shuts down #1 receivers. Don’t expect much from Ginn this week as he faces Asomugha, but all the other Dolphins should do great.

Alright, that’s it for this week. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions feel free to send me a message or post it as a comment. I’ll do my best to get back to you before tomorrow’s games. Good luck and happy trading!
