SACKED!

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Wow, this came out of NOWHERE. After 13 seasons, the 2nd longest NFL Head Coach tenure ended today with the firing of MIKE FRICKIN’ SHANAHAN!! Wow…We knew Romeo, Mangini, and that awful dude Marinelli in Detroit were all on the hot seat…but who thought this would happen?

Shanahan immediately becomes the hottest commodity in the NFL Coaching market, other than Bill Cowher. And suddenly Bill Cowher’s stock takes a hit. Cowher has 1 Superbowl ring. Shanahan has two. And Denver will now owe Shanahan $20 million over the next 3 years, so Shanahan can go anywhere for a relatively low salary.

Here is the news release.

DENVER (Reuters) – Denver fired head coach Mike Shanahan on Tuesday after the Broncos lost their final three regular season games to miss out on the playoffs.

Shanahan, who took over as head coach in 1995, was the second-longest tenured coach in the NFL behind Tennessee Titans Jeff Fisher.

“After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos,” said owner Pat Bowlen in a statement on the team’s website (http:/www.denverbroncos.com).

Breaking News-Teixeira to Yanks in Ridiculous Contract Agreement

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

From ESPN.com, expect our Nation Baseball analyst “TheBrett” to share his thoughts tonight.

Free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira has reached agreement with the New York Yankees on an eight-year contract worth more than $170 million, two sources involved in the negotiations tell ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney.

The Yankees swooped in on Teixeira on Tuesday when it was believed the Boston Red Sox or the Washington Nationals were the likeliest to be his future employer. The Red Sox’s offer was believed to be in the range of $170 million, and the Nationals reached out with an offer perhaps greater than that of Boston.

Teixeira finished last season with the Los Angeles Angels following a trade from Atlanta. The Angels withdrew from negotiations on Sunday night, in a very public manner, and say they were moving on to other players.

Because Teixeira grew up in the Baltimore area, the Orioles had long been viewed as a possible landing spot for him. But since the O’s made a seven-year, $140 million offer, they did not revise it — nor have they had active negotiations with his agent, Scott Boras, according to sources.

Teixeira’s negotiations with the Red Sox appeared to stall last week in the failed meeting between the team executives and the player. The Nationals reportedly made an offer of eight years and $160 million.

The first baseman had made it clear that he wanted to make a decision on where to play next season and beyond by Christmas.

The Yankees have spent more than $400 million in salary in the last month, with $161 million going to left-handed pitcher CC Sabathia in a seven-year deal and $82.5 million on right-hander A.J. Burnett for five years.

The agreement with Teixeira gives New York the four highest-paid players in baseball — third baseman Alex Rodriguez, shortstop Derek Jeter, Sabathia and Teixeira.

Buster Olney is a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine.

Ask Mike Session 6!

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Session 6 of Ask Mike is here for your enjoyment. Thanks to OneSeason and Mike Sroka for continuing this program for the Nation. Thanks to Boonflop for gathering the questions. Session 7 to come soon. Get your questions in to Boonflop in the forums!

Thekid  Will there ever be risk limits placed when entering orders? For example, you can only place orders with a limit price of +/- 25 cents current best bid or best offer to prevent manipulation and trading mistakes.

Answer:  Order confirmations should prevent mistakes when placing an order.  We do not want to interfere with willing buyers and sellers transacting by putting limits on the orders that can be placed.  This seems to be consistent with how other marketplaces (market systems) operate.  Hopefully the recent changes to the Trade Orders screen improves the transparency and usability.

2. Tdpenny2000 — Multiple part question: Why was PORT released next day as opposed to the 2 day wait we have seen with all the other IPOs? What determines what time during the day the IPO is actually released (not announced)?

Answer:  There is no set time period for when IPO’s will be released relative to the Notice of Upcoming Issue.  We want to balance providing users with enough time to put in their indication of interest (request to obtain SOIs) while not freezing funds for longer than necessary.

We started out announcing the time of day an IPO would be released but this caused a massive spike in activity (lots of concurrent users hitting refresh) causing poor system performance.  We now release IPO’s at an unspecified time when our development team can monitor the release and ensure the issuance occurs properly.

3. DrDread — HHHHmMMMmmmm.. Maybe a question on a Quick update for Canada and how it’s going? Maybe ask him if he expects more Hockey IPO’s with More Canadians on the site and will it be more than NFL (since no one beating the NBA.)

Answer:  I do not have any update on the timing of potentially expanding into the Canadian market.  As mentioned previously, operating in new markets requires a lot of work relating to legal research, payment processing and fraud prevention.  During our first 12 weeks of operation we have not been able to complete this work yet.

4.New2Boston — Is someone is working on improving graphing?

Answer:  YES!  We have begun tackling some of the front end clean-up items and you should see improvements to the graphs shortly.

5.TdPennyWhat is the purpose of the reserved cash remaining reserved until the shares are sold?
Answer:  The purpose behind the entire IPO process is to create a flat system that encourages active use of the site and provides everyone with an equal opportunity to participate.  IPOs should be special but must also stimulate activity in the secondary market.  Users do not actually pay to obtain IPOs but this is balanced with potential opportunity costs associated with having funds not available for other purposes.  This is consistent with the above mentioned goals as it spreads out the allocation of IPOs and creates an incentive to sell into the secondary market.

6.TDPenny What is the typical day like for you guys?

Answer:  I think that I speak for everybody here when I say this is our dream job.  That being said, getting this company humming along requires significant commitment and I could not be prouder of our team and all of their hard work so far.  One of the many stimulating things about this experience is that there is no typical day.  We have a small team and a TON of work to do so everybody has to wear a lot of hats.  Operating a new market that is open 15 hours a day, 6 days a week and much of the development occurs after market hours and on Saturdays means office is home.

7. Biggins Wht is ur guys thoughts on the negative pessimistic misleading untrue pyramid ponzi scheme crap that is polluting the OneSeason boards ask him that we know its not true but why they allow people to say all those false statements or try and scare people into leaving oneseason because its failing

Answer:  I think that we are going to have to start moderating the message boards as these false and misleading statements do not add value to the OneSeason community.  It has been our preference to allow users to interact as they please as long as it is not threatening or offensive.  We underestimated the amount of time and energy some folks are willing to commit to something that they apparently do not like.  This is unfortunate for them, we hope that they find what they are looking for but will not facilitate this activity in the future.

8. Slappy ask him what he thinks about all of the people who are coming up with all of their ways and ideas and theories about rescuing OneSeason from the coming apocolypse. does 1season need saving?

Answer:  We always want to hear suggestions from our users and want to move forward with the best system possible.  We launched OneSeason 12 weeks ago and are just getting started.  There is a ton of stuff designed that we are working to implement.  The only way we know how to accomplish these things is in phases (build, open, tweak, repeat).  We are thrilled with the progress we have made thus far and are way ahead of where we expected to be right now.  We are hopeful that folks enjoy the current functionality and will be patient as the platform is built out.  I encourage everyone to review the evolution of other popular systems for reference frame on the necessary time associated with building out a successful product.

9. BB  some people believe that a flood of new user signup is not a top priority for you guys at this time. is this true? if so, how far out do you project that driving huge amounts of traffic to the site like we saw in october, will be your number 1 priority?

Answer:  Our top priority is building out a great product.  As mentioned above, we still have a lot of work to do just to implement the things that have been designed.  We want to stay disciplined and follow our initial plan: build and stabilize trading system, improve social features and open functionality to 3rd parties, attract content producers to use the platform, attract users to a compelling offering.  Please note that the early spikes in traffic were viral (user and media driven not company driven) and attracted a lot of folks that do not usually consume online sports entertainment.  Ideally, we would like to achieve moderate, steady growth with users that want to be a part of a new, exciting way to enjoy sports online.

New Sponsor. New Contest. First of it’s kind. ON FIELD PERFORMANCE MATTERS!

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

It’s finally here! Our newest sponsor is a great sports collectible and memorabilia store called “Today’s Stars Tomorrow’s Legends” They are sponsoring a contest where, now, ON FIELD PERFORMANCE MATTERS! You can WIN STUFF for having Top Performers in your Sportfolio! Here is how the contest goes.

Each month, the sponsor will nominate an SOI who was the dominant player in their sport for the previous month. This player will be TSTL’s “Hero of the Month”, and have compelling statistics from the previous month to back up the nomination. To enter the contest, you have to respond to the announcement of the TSTL Player of the Month with how many shares you own of that player and what price you posted them for sale on OneSeason (make it obscenely high, so they don’t sell). This reporting will be done by you at the OneSeason Nation home page, as a comment response to the announcement of the player. In order for the sponsor to verify, you will need to go into OneSeason, and create a SELL order for that player, with an obscenely high sale amount. Post the sale here with your email address (important! So the sponsor can get in touch with you!!) in the “Reply” section under the players picture, and you’ll be entered into the contest. For instance. If you own 10 shares of Brees, you would go into OneSeason, create a SELL 10 BREES for $5,000 each. An order will come up on the trade window in OneSeason SELL 10 BREES $5000. Keep this sale order up, until you see your name added to the master list back under the picture of the player when he’s announced. Once you see your name and your shares, you are free to sell your shares, or carry on as normal. The contest doesn’t require you to hold your shares. You may also add to your total at any point up until the day of the drawing. Here is an example of how to prove your shares owned. If you have 15 shares of Brees, you’d create a fake sell order like this one…

You would then go to Brees’ announcement on this page, and post “15 shares 12/21/08 19:34:26 $12345.00″ Don’t forget to put your email in there, so the sponsor can contact you! Once you see your entry added under the picture of the player, feel free to remove the order.

The prizes will be a drawing for credits towards TSTL’s online store. So if you have 1 share, you’ll get 1 entry into the drawing. 10 shares, 10 entries into the drawing. 6000 shares, 6000 entries into the drawing. Everyone can participate, even non-Nation members. Obviously the people with the most amount of shares will have a greater chance of winning, but they will not be a lock to win! The contest has it’s own category so you can find it easily. Look for “TSTL’s Performance Contest” in the left side links on the Nation’s homepage.

Here is the current prize pool being offered by Today’s Stars Tomorrow’s Legends.

  • 1st drawing $5 credit in sponsor’s online store.
  • 2nd drawing $10 credit in sponsor’s online store.
  • 3rd drawing $25 credit in sponsor’s online store.

As an early Christmas Present, TSTL has selected a top performer from the NFL for week 13-16. This special Holiday Edition of the contest will be only from today through Jan. 1. A new month long THTL Player of the Month will be announced on Jan 1.  In the meantime….if you own BRIAN WESTBROOK GAME ON! TSTL will hold the drawing on or after Jan. 1 and the winner of the Westbrook sweepstakes will be announced. Because this is a shortened contest only 10 days long, there will be 1 drawing as opposed to 3. And the winner will get $10 in the sponsors online store.

HERE IS YOUR THTL HERO OF THE MONTH! GET YOUR SHARES OWNED POSTED ALONG WITH A MATCHING SELL ORDER FOR AN ABNORMALLY HIGH DOLLAR AMOUNT SO THE SPONSOR CAN VERIFY!

Brian Westbrook TSTL’s Player of the Month-Special 10 day holiday issue. Week 13-Week 16 294 Rushing Yards 106 Receiving Yards. 6 TD overall (3 rushing, 3 recieving)

REMEMBER, You can always increase your entries into the drawing if you get more than your first submission during the month. A confirmed sell order with a higher amount of shares than the one you have confirmed will override your first submission.

Why isn’t OneSeason Spending Money Marketing the Site and Focusing on New Users?

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

This is probably the question that is asked the most. It is probably the source of the most suggestions and solutions on how to “save” OneSeason, or drive more users to the site. I’d like to take a second to help you out, if you are frustrated that there aren’t massive amounts of people signing up for OneSeason, like there was in October. OneSeason does NOT need saving. Again. Read it, and understand it. ONESEASON DOES NOT NEED SAVING. OneSeason has a business plan. Long Term. OneSeason has a priority list short term. Plain and simple. We know this from interviews, articles, and question and answer sessions. OneSeason doesn’t WANT huge spikes of new users at this time. I would even guess that they have double what they thought they would at the 11 week in point. The fact of the matter is that driving traffic to the site is low on the priority list. Items that are high on the priority list are things like making improvements to the site. Making improvments to the trading engine. Making the social features function as envisioned. The most important thing is that OneSeason learns how live people will use the site. This concept has never been done before just like this. No software or program can duplicate, or simulate how actual live people will get on a site and use it. Unfortunately a lot of time is being spent watching how people try to scam and try to use the system fraudulently. OneSeason is learning these things, and making changes to make the experience better, and prevent fraudulent activity.

As the items on the top of this priority are knocked out, and the site gets built up, you can expect at some point that driving traffic to the site becomes the priority. The fact right now is that it’s not a priority. OneSeason is learning from us how future people will come to the site and use it. (Use it in good intended ways, and use it in shady, unscrupulous ways) So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. OneSeason is here to stay. The plan for OneSeason is VERY long term. The more that people realize this, and have some fun trading and accumulating their favorite players, rather than being focused purely on money, the better those people will feel overall about the state of the site.

R.I.P. RCA Dome 1984-2008

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

The RCA dome, former home of the Indianapolis Colts, was imploded today ending an ERA. The 24 year old Stadium, that sat nearly 58,000 for football was replaced this year by Lucas Oil Field. Here are some fun facts about the RCA Dome.

  • Originally named “Hoosier Dome” until 1994 when RCA spend $10 million on the naming rights.
  • The RCA Dome hosted WrestleMania VIII in 1992
  • The playing surface was originally “Astroturf” and was changed to “FieldTurf” in May of 2005.
  • The roof was made up of teflon-coated fiberglass and weighed 257 tons, which was held up by the air pressure inside the building.
  • The RCA Dome was imploded at a cost of $3,500,000

Happy Saturday Everyone

If you haven’t got your caption in for the caption contest, make sure you do so! You can enter as many times are you like! Thanks to our great sponsor Art to Shirt for making this happen. Click here to go to this weeks current photo caption contest.

Today’s article, like many of our articles, comes from a Nation contributor. Thanks BJHunter!

Ever since we got off the gold standard, the only thing behind our money is the U.S. government. Basically our money is a bit of an illusion in itself. When the government “starts printing money” which really means selling US Treasuries, nothing of any physical presence is created. It’s all done electronically. People buy these bonds anyways because they believe it’s the most stable government in the world. So basically the government can get billions of dollars out of thin air. (But the more bonds you sell, the perception of your currency will change)

From this point of view I’m very comfortable with virtual shares. At this point in time I see an SOI as an investment in OneSeason.com, there trading platform, their future in fantasy sports, and in the future people becoming very comfortable with virtual goods. As you saw in the past (mid oct.) the perception was very positive and very real. People were paying $90 for a share of Lebron. That’s nine REAL hours of work(1 Day) for someone making $10 an hour. That $10 an hour worker would get a paycheck(a piece of paper) which he could then exchange for more paper(dollar bills). Oddly enough he could go to the grocery store and exchange if for milk. Now if you look from the outside on this situation with an open mind, you would ask yourself, why on Earth would anyone exchange milk for a piece of paper. You can drink the milk to give your body energy and nutrition, that piece of paper has no real tangible value…(perhaps you could write a grocery list with it) But it happens every day!

As you can see it’s all a matter of perception…

And if anyone wants evidence of the illusion of a virtual marketplace alive and well, look up Second Life on Wikipedia…they have a $500 million dollar market.

Portis Hits the Market and is Met With a Flurrey of Undercutting

Thursday, December 18th, 2008
Portis 2

Portis 2

Clinton Portis was released into the market today, and immediately folks scrambled to clear him out of their IPO sportfolio. We have different opinions as to why this happened, but the most logical reason is that folks no longer see the value of letting an IPO sit in your IPO bucket, and collect value. This just means you have to pay more in the long run. 5% off shares in your IPO bucket, 1% off shares in your regular SOI bucket. The smart money is selling IPOs off, and if you believe in that player, and want to hold on to him, buy them back into your regular SOI bucket. Let the sit there and split.

Derrick Rose is our next contestant on the IPO is Right. Derrrrrickkk Rosseeeeeee, COME ON DOWWWNNNNNN!
